Our fourth semester studio project began with a series of material studies. Through a series of exercises of multiplication and accumulation, the material study transitioned from morsel to lattice to diorama.

STEP 1

The first assignment was to create a “bite-sized” morsel as a base unit. My morsel was made of multicolored yarn that was braided into a loop. I made it rigid by soaking it in starch and heating each unit.

STEP 2

Accumulation of morsels to create a rigid surface with variation in unit density and presence of frayed edges.

STEP 3

Introduction of gravity. As the morsels pile on each other, the bottom of the mound expands to support the rising structure.

STEP 4

Reimagined as an inhabitable landscape, the morsel creates a mountain landscape within the diorama.
